    Basil pesto goodness

    27 April, 201629 March, 2018

Now that summer is well and truly over and autumn is here, it is time for a final harvest of my basil plants.  They are already starting to feel the cold nights, and their discomfort shows in the leaves.  I had great intentions for my basil plants this summer, but unfortunately things got so busy and

Milk kefir – what it is and what you can do with it

    19 April, 201629 March, 2018

My family has been making and enjoying milk kefir for about two years now.  It was the second homemade fermented food we tried, after yoghurt.  I found homemade yoghurt too time consuming and too fussy to prepare for my liking, and although it was fun and rewarding at first, I got tired of the heating,

  • I've started taking red maca powder daily, to support my hormones in a natural, no-risk sort of way. I think it's actually doing some good! I think I feel calmer, less moody... Could it be the placebo effect? - Yes. Do I care? - No. An effect is an effect as far as I'm concerned, placebo or not! 😜 Maca is an adaptogen, which means it supposedly supports your own body to balance its hormones. It's also a cruciferous vegetable grown in Peru, so if nothing else I'm just adding a bit of ground-up broccoli-like vegetable into my (decaf) coffees, haha! Just having a nice relaxing cuppa before I head out and pick the kids up from school... πŸ§˜β€β™€οΈ . . #maca #redmaca #macawithmycoffee #balancinghormonesnaturally #naturalmoodsupport #foodsthatheal #placeboeffect
  • I'm excited to share that the Merkur 23C safety razor is now available from the Mrs Goodness shop! πŸ˜† (link in bio) Also, the excellent and very affordable Astra razor blades. I've just written a blog post that's all about my own safety razor experiences. I love my #merkur and I'll never use anything else - #buylesschoosewellmakeitlast πŸ’š . . #buywellbuyonce #merkurrazor #desafetyrazor #nomoreplastic #plasticfreealternatives #plasticfreebathroom #plasticfreeshaving #ditchdisposables #gooddesign #designedtolast #formfollowsfunction #mrsgoodnessshop #blogpost #mrsgoodness
  • Thank you, little one, for helping out my cucumber plant! My Lebanese cucumber has done so well this summer, I'm so happy! My kids get whole cucumbers in their lunchbox and they love them 😊. My gherkins, on the other hand, have been a bit of a dud - I think I've had 10 gherkins from 2 plants so far! Not so much gherkin pickling going on here... πŸ˜’ . . #helpfullittlebee #bees #beefood #veggiegarden #growingfood #homegrownveggies #sprayfreegarden
  • OK, so my mind is officially 🀯, haha! I just strained the apple scraps from my apple scrap vinegar. I've made almost 1.5L of raw fermented apple vinegar for the mere cost of a couple of tablespoons of sugar! πŸ˜… And its soooo easy, I can't quite believe it... • We were invited to take as many apples as we wanted from a friend's backyard apple tree. They're homegrown, spray-free, REAL apples and amazingly there were lots that were worm-free, yay! We've chilled the worm-free ones, and then I made two batches of sugar-free appelmoes which have gone into the freezer for baking and winter porridge πŸ˜‹. As for the skins and clean cores, I'm using them to make scrap apple vinegar! It's SUCH an easy process to make apple vinegar, and ultra-frugal too. I froze the rest of the peels and cores so I can make subsequent batches of vinegar, as per the ingenious suggestion of the @zerowastechef (whose recipe I also used: https://zerowastechef.com/2014/10/30/apple-scrap-vinegar/) Alas, I can't enjoy apples myself, because their super-high fructose levels give me the (farts😳) ... but the kids are loving them! . . #applevinegar #applescrapvinegar #homemadevinegar #naturallyfermented #frugallysustainable #frugalkitchen #lovefoodhatewaste #nowastedfood #applescraps #homegrownapples #sprayfree #backyardharvest
