This kit was designed to encourage people to make their own toiletries, because there are just so many good reasons to do so!  By making things from scratch you can:

– be in control of what’s in the end product, and how much;
– buy ingredients in bulk, saving not only money but also reducing the amount of packaging waste;
– significantly reduce your plastic footprint by reusing containers and bottles;
– buy locally-sourced ingredients and support local businesses;
– ensure your ingredients were sourced fairly and ethically.

With this in mind, the mouthwash bottle will be empty upon receipt! However, the recipe has been etched onto the glass bottle, so you will never have trouble remembering how to make it for yourself 😉 . The organic clove bud oil is provided to get you started, but to make a bottle of your own mouthwash you will need to add 1tsp baking soda and 500mL boiled water (preferably filtered!).  The 5mL clove oil provided as part of the kit should last you months and months.  The jar for the tooth whitening paste contains 1tsp activated charcoal powder (food grade). To make your own tooth whitening paste, you need to add 1tsp baking soda and 2tsp virgin coconut oil.  This too should last you a good while!

And now, a little explanation about the ingredients:

Clove oil is often used in dental care products because it has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, making it effective against dental pain, sore gums, mouth ulcers, cavities, and bad breath. However, please note that as with all essential oils, clove oil is potent and should always be used in diluted form. The mouthwash recipe is intended for gargling and spitting out, not drinking! Clove oil is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding mamas, and it may cause intestinal discomfort to children so please use with caution.

Activated charcoal is a natural product (the activated charcoal in your tooth care kit is made from coconut shell) that has long been used for its ability to trap toxins and chemicals in its tiny pores. This makes it a safe, effective treatment for poisoning, deodorising, and disinfecting.  It is even used to filter water!  Activated charcoal is therefore safe to ingest (if used properly), although the tooth whitening paste is intended to be spat out like toothpaste rather than swallowed! Be careful when using it, as it WILL stain grout and fabric, and it might stain crowns, caps, and veneers.  It is slightly abrasive, which is why I only use it every 2-3 weeks.  For more information on activated charcoal, check out:

If you haven’t already read my blog post on toothbrushing ( you might not know that I don’t use toothpaste! My husband and I brush our teeth with Sabun soap (read the post to find out why).  Sabun soap contains only three ingredients: olive oil, bay laurel oil, and salt.  This makes it extremely safe to use on even sensitive skin; plus some people wash their hair with it, and in our case, we brush our teeth with it!  One bar of this soap will probably last a whole family a couple of years if it is used just for tooth brushing, so I would probably recommend cutting chunks of soap off and using smallish bits at a time.  If you’re not game enough to use it in your mouth you could just stick to washing your skin with it 😉 .

Why would you make your own mouthwash? Some food for thought below:
