Why I choose to use glass in my kitchen (over plastic)

    13 July, 201629 March, 2018

Last week a very good mummy-friend of mine asked me why I choose to use glass to store our food in, over durable, effective plastic storage solutions such as Tupperware.  It was very brave of her to ask me this, as all my friends know I can chew their ears off when I get talking

    Homemade hummus, made from scratch

    5 July, 20163 April, 2018

For my first post this Plastic-Free July, I’ve decided I’ll share with you how I make hummus from scratch.  This is something I’m doing about once a week these days, as my little boy is OBSESSED with it!  He’s not really talking yet, so he just squeals and points to indicate that me spreading the

    Plastic-free water

    11 May, 20163 April, 2018

One of the first commonly used items we switched away from plastic was our water bottles.  Plastic is an enduringly popular choice for drink bottles, despite health risks, because it’s cheap and just plain practical.  There is no denying that silicone covered glass or stainless steel water bottles are significantly more expensive than plastic bottles,

    Plastic-free fruit and vegetables

    4 May, 201629 March, 2018

Growing up, I only ever recall storing our vegetables in the plastic bins at the bottom of the fridge.  Now that we don’t use them anymore I have to say that I found them so irritating!  Like cutlery drawers, those vege drawers would always fill up with debris that I just never got around to cleaning

How to organise an eco-friendly laundry

    12 April, 201629 March, 2018

When it comes to dangerous chemicals, whether you’re eco-friendly or not, the laundry must be the hub of the house (well, perhaps excepting the garage).  We have only just recently attached child-proofing gadgets to our kitchen cupboards, as little Daniel is very inquisitive and likes to go digging around in any little nook and cranny below waist height.

    Homemade lotions and potions

    4 April, 201629 March, 2018

I now make all our toiletries myself.  By toiletries, I mean lotions and potions like face cream, body cream, deodorant, insect repellent, sun screen, and nappy balm (we call it bum balm!). While there are many commercially made eco-friendly, cruelty-free products available these days, I don’t buy them because in general, I find them hideously

    My hair un-cleaning journey

    23 March, 201629 March, 2018

Since puberty, I have considered myself slightly unfortunate for having ‘oily’ genes.  Photos of me in my early twenties almost always featured reflective patches on my face, as the light bounced off my oily skin.  I’m not quite sure how or when it came to be that I needed to wash my hair at least

  • I only have one of these kits left because they've been so popular this summer! Should have more available later this week 😘 • • • #Repost @yunivorous (a past student of mine! šŸ˜„) . Fermenting made easy using the @mrsgoodness.nz fermenting kit. @mrsgoodness.nz, I finally got onto making that kimchi šŸ˜†. I’m starting with the classic Napa cabbage kimchi for now, but with that giganto bag of gochugaru, I foresee some different kimchi combos coming along. . . . #kimchi #homemade #homemadekimchi #fermenting #fermentedfoods #fermentation #fermentingkit #mrsgoodness #mrsgoodnessshop
  • It's a rockmelon!! šŸ˜† I've never grown rockmelon before so I'm a bit nervous... will they shrivel up and die? or will they be juicy and sweet... šŸ˜›? Surely you can't get a better summer than this one for melon-growing! šŸŒž #itssohotimmelting haha šŸ˜Ž . . #rockmelon #imgrowingamelon #homegrownfood #backyardgarden #hopefulgardener #veggiegarden #summerfruit #imgrowingfood
  • This is a long-time favourite quote of mine. Some people focus all their energies on what is happening to them. Others on who/what they are. The latter is the only thing we really have control of, I think. . . #inspirationquote #motivationalquote #itswhatyouremadeof #itsallaboutattitude
  • Wow, are radishes the easiest veg to grow from seed? šŸ˜®šŸ˜† Stella and I harvested the radishes we sowed from seed it feels like just a few weeks ago! They're already on my shelf in the earliest stages of fermenting. My kids find radishes too spicy to eat fresh but fermented they pop them like lollies! Instead of spicy they end up crunchy sour. Radishes are a quick ferment - I usually leave them for just 4 - 5 days. . . #radishes #fermentedradish #fermentingkit #homegrownveggies #homegrownfood #summerharvest #sownfromseed #realfood #goodfood #fermentedfood #homemadeferments
  • I've started taking red maca powder daily, to support my hormones in a natural, no-risk sort of way. I think it's actually doing some good! I think I feel calmer, less moody... Could it be the placebo effect? - Yes. Do I care? - No. An effect is an effect as far as I'm concerned, placebo or not! 😜 Maca is an adaptogen, which means it supposedly supports your own body to balance its hormones. It's also a cruciferous vegetable grown in Peru, so if nothing else I'm just adding a bit of ground-up broccoli-like vegetable into my (decaf) coffees, haha! Just having a nice relaxing cuppa before I head out and pick the kids up from school... šŸ§˜ā€ā™€ļø . . #maca #redmaca #macawithmycoffee #balancinghormonesnaturally #naturalmoodsupport #foodsthatheal #placeboeffect
