    On giving myself a break

    13 October, 201629 March, 2018

Hmm, the trouble with relaxing is it makes you realise how tired you are… and then it’s very difficult not to relax more! Last weekend I went on a little family holiday to Waiheke Island.  It was my first real holiday in over 2 years!  Consequently, I now realise it was far too short because

Some thoughts on our attitude towards diet

    27 September, 201629 March, 2018

When I was a teacher of design, I did a project with my senior students that encouraged them to learn a little bit about design history.  The two significant design eras I focussed on were Modernism and Post-modernism because I just loved to teach them all about the social, political, technological, and ideological changes that

Sourdough pancakes are good for you!

    21 September, 20163 April, 2018

If you’ve had a go at sourdough or have taken an interest in it already, you will know that a sourdough starter, as a living, growing thing, needs to be used regularly, so that you have a reason to continue feeding it with fresh flour and water daily (or a little less frequently if you

    Easy-peasy Sourdough Bread

    14 September, 201629 March, 2018

I’m excited to share with you my recipe for easy-peasy homemade sourdough bread this week.  Just in case you weren’t waiting for it, this post follows on from my last, Why We Switched To Sourdough. Because we’d been baking fresh bread in our bread maker for a few years before I decided to try sourdough,

    Why we switched to sourdough

    7 September, 201629 March, 2018

Before I start writing this post about how much I love baking and eating sourdough bread, I just want to make it really clear that I am not an expert on sourdough, bread making, or baking!  I’m just a really ordinary mum/homemaker who bakes enough bread to feed her family.  I’m new to sourdough, and

On taking time to make things happen

    25 August, 201629 March, 2018

Things have been a little quiet on the blogging front lately, as I’ve been busy making preparations for a Mrs Goodness Shop!  I’m very excited at the prospect of being able to make and stock beautiful and practical homeware items that are really focussed on sustainable living and ethical consumerism, without sacrificing style and quality.

Coconut oil – why I love it and how I use it

    16 August, 201629 March, 2018

Coconut oil is fast becoming about as much of a “super-oil” as olive oil did when I was a teen.  I remember when my mum started buying olive oil for cooking, because it was proclaimed to be the healthiest oil you could possibly cook with.  Mum used it for everything: stir-frying, baking, roasting, dressings… Everything. Well,

How Truffle the dog changed my life

    9 August, 201629 March, 2018

Anyone who knows me well also knows that this little black dog with the white chin may be credited with saving my life.  Perhaps not in a dramatic news-worthy fashion, involving dangerous waters or venomous snakes; but his entrance into my life undoubtedly kickstarted my recovery out of a bad case of depression.  I think

    Mummy’s Milo

    27 July, 20163 April, 2018

Growing up, I guess I always took it for granted that Milo was made in New Zealand. I’m not quite sure why; I suppose it was my own ignorance …or clever advertising by Nestlรฉ helped me to form that wrong assumption. Well anyway, that was my understanding well into adulthood, so that when I left home (after

  • I only have one of these kits left because they've been so popular this summer! Should have more available later this week ๐Ÿ˜˜ โ€ข โ€ข โ€ข #Repost @yunivorous (a past student of mine! ๐Ÿ˜„) . Fermenting made easy using the @mrsgoodness.nz fermenting kit. @mrsgoodness.nz, I finally got onto making that kimchi ๐Ÿ˜†. Iโ€™m starting with the classic Napa cabbage kimchi for now, but with that giganto bag of gochugaru, I foresee some different kimchi combos coming along. . . . #kimchi #homemade #homemadekimchi #fermenting #fermentedfoods #fermentation #fermentingkit #mrsgoodness #mrsgoodnessshop
  • It's a rockmelon!! ๐Ÿ˜† I've never grown rockmelon before so I'm a bit nervous... will they shrivel up and die? or will they be juicy and sweet... ๐Ÿ˜›? Surely you can't get a better summer than this one for melon-growing! ๐ŸŒž #itssohotimmelting haha ๐Ÿ˜Ž . . #rockmelon #imgrowingamelon #homegrownfood #backyardgarden #hopefulgardener #veggiegarden #summerfruit #imgrowingfood
  • This is a long-time favourite quote of mine. Some people focus all their energies on what is happening to them. Others on who/what they are. The latter is the only thing we really have control of, I think. . . #inspirationquote #motivationalquote #itswhatyouremadeof #itsallaboutattitude
  • Wow, are radishes the easiest veg to grow from seed? ๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿ˜† Stella and I harvested the radishes we sowed from seed it feels like just a few weeks ago! They're already on my shelf in the earliest stages of fermenting. My kids find radishes too spicy to eat fresh but fermented they pop them like lollies! Instead of spicy they end up crunchy sour. Radishes are a quick ferment - I usually leave them for just 4 - 5 days. . . #radishes #fermentedradish #fermentingkit #homegrownveggies #homegrownfood #summerharvest #sownfromseed #realfood #goodfood #fermentedfood #homemadeferments
  • I've started taking red maca powder daily, to support my hormones in a natural, no-risk sort of way. I think it's actually doing some good! I think I feel calmer, less moody... Could it be the placebo effect? - Yes. Do I care? - No. An effect is an effect as far as I'm concerned, placebo or not! ๐Ÿ˜œ Maca is an adaptogen, which means it supposedly supports your own body to balance its hormones. It's also a cruciferous vegetable grown in Peru, so if nothing else I'm just adding a bit of ground-up broccoli-like vegetable into my (decaf) coffees, haha! Just having a nice relaxing cuppa before I head out and pick the kids up from school... ๐Ÿง˜โ€โ™€๏ธ . . #maca #redmaca #macawithmycoffee #balancinghormonesnaturally #naturalmoodsupport #foodsthatheal #placeboeffect
  • I'm excited to share that the Merkur 23C safety razor is now available from the Mrs Goodness shop! ๐Ÿ˜† (link in bio) Also, the excellent and very affordable Astra razor blades. I've just written a blog post that's all about my own safety razor experiences.
