    Lacto-fermented porridge

    4 April, 20173 April, 2018

We have the same breakfast without fail every single morning.  There have been a couple of times when we’ve tried to jazz things up and eat something different like toast and eggs for breakfast, but pretty much the next day we would always go back to eating our firm family favourite: lacto-fermented porridge!  And then

    Responsible consumerism

    15 March, 201714 April, 2018

It’s an unfortunate fact of life for all creatures great and small, that there are ‘haves’ and ‘have-nots’.  And although there are some weeks when I don’t know where our next mortgage payment is coming from, I’m pretty sure that as far as 99% of the world’s population is concerned, I’m a ‘have’.  Why? Because

On doing what you can and feeling good about it

    2 March, 201714 April, 2018

A few weekends ago I took the first step towards realising my New Year’s resolution for 2017 by attending a beginners’ workshop in Ashtanga yoga. I had such an amazing time, and when I came home on Sunday afternoon I was fully resolved to practise my new moves every day.  I envisaged a year of physical

    Why we quit milk

    16 February, 201714 April, 2018

I’ve been meaning to write about dairy for months, but my original intention was to write about why we were prepared to spend more on organic dairy.  Well, now we don’t drink milk anymore and we’ve cut out all dairy except for milk kefir and cultured butter from our family’s diet!  The old me wouldn’t have

    Fructose and flatulence

    3 February, 201714 April, 2018

Hmm, the title of this blog post sounds a little bit like one of Jane Austen’s novels, doesn’t it?  Unfortunately, my story is far less civilised and subtle than anything she would have written! In fact, I doubt Ms. Austen’s heroines ever farted, much less talked about it.  Well I am about to do both,

    New year, new resolutions

    17 January, 201714 April, 2018

In the weeks leading up to Christmas last year, I did two crazy things: I quit coffee, and then I quit sugar.  Neither of which were premeditated at all!  The decision to quit coffee came first, sometime in November, when a prolific blogger I occasionally follow published a blog post about coffee.  The article wasn’t

    Hay fever!

    27 November, 201614 April, 2018

A few weeks’ ago I was really excited at the prospect of writing this post about hay fever because I planned to proclaim that for the first time in my adult life, I don’t have it!  No sneezing, no itchy dry eyes, no fuzzy head, no runny nose… nothing!  Unfortunately, after three plus weeks of wind,

    Homemade sunscreen

    15 November, 201629 March, 2018

When I was a kid, I don’t recall ever using sunscreen (although perhaps that’s just my flawed memory). What I do remember is lying out on the lawn as a young teenager with a bottle of Johnson&Johnson’s baby oil (shudder…) slathering it over my skin in the hope of getting a quick bronze tan.  I

Fermented food – what’s the big deal?

    25 October, 201629 March, 2018

If you’ve taken even the smallest interest in healthy eating over the past couple of years, you will have noticed that fermented foods are all the rage. Yoghurt as a source of probiotics is just so yesterday; now everyone’s talking about kombucha, kefir, kimchi and sauerkraut, and some of us are making them too.  But perhaps

  • I only have one of these kits left because they've been so popular this summer! Should have more available later this week 😘 • • • #Repost @yunivorous (a past student of mine! šŸ˜„) . Fermenting made easy using the @mrsgoodness.nz fermenting kit. @mrsgoodness.nz, I finally got onto making that kimchi šŸ˜†. I’m starting with the classic Napa cabbage kimchi for now, but with that giganto bag of gochugaru, I foresee some different kimchi combos coming along. . . . #kimchi #homemade #homemadekimchi #fermenting #fermentedfoods #fermentation #fermentingkit #mrsgoodness #mrsgoodnessshop
  • It's a rockmelon!! šŸ˜† I've never grown rockmelon before so I'm a bit nervous... will they shrivel up and die? or will they be juicy and sweet... šŸ˜›? Surely you can't get a better summer than this one for melon-growing! šŸŒž #itssohotimmelting haha šŸ˜Ž . . #rockmelon #imgrowingamelon #homegrownfood #backyardgarden #hopefulgardener #veggiegarden #summerfruit #imgrowingfood
  • This is a long-time favourite quote of mine. Some people focus all their energies on what is happening to them. Others on who/what they are. The latter is the only thing we really have control of, I think. . . #inspirationquote #motivationalquote #itswhatyouremadeof #itsallaboutattitude
  • Wow, are radishes the easiest veg to grow from seed? šŸ˜®šŸ˜† Stella and I harvested the radishes we sowed from seed it feels like just a few weeks ago! They're already on my shelf in the earliest stages of fermenting. My kids find radishes too spicy to eat fresh but fermented they pop them like lollies! Instead of spicy they end up crunchy sour. Radishes are a quick ferment - I usually leave them for just 4 - 5 days. . . #radishes #fermentedradish #fermentingkit #homegrownveggies #homegrownfood #summerharvest #sownfromseed #realfood #goodfood #fermentedfood #homemadeferments
  • I've started taking red maca powder daily, to support my hormones in a natural, no-risk sort of way. I think it's actually doing some good! I think I feel calmer, less moody... Could it be the placebo effect? - Yes. Do I care? - No. An effect is an effect as far as I'm concerned, placebo or not! 😜 Maca is an adaptogen, which means it supposedly supports your own body to balance its hormones. It's also a cruciferous vegetable grown in Peru, so if nothing else I'm just adding a bit of ground-up broccoli-like vegetable into my (decaf) coffees, haha! Just having a nice relaxing cuppa before I head out and pick the kids up from school... šŸ§˜ā€ā™€ļø . . #maca #redmaca #macawithmycoffee #balancinghormonesnaturally #naturalmoodsupport #foodsthatheal #placeboeffect
